Street advice
I have rented a room in a large, colonial house, with a pirate flag on top, in Santa Teresa, an old, twisty-turny bit of Rio much nearer the centre than my luxurious existence in Joá. Simba has been kind enough to let me stay in his place too, so now I have both ends of Rio's Zona Sul covered. The other day, walking up the hill from the underground, two of us came across a bunch of Shoreditch types flyposting the street with slogans. So this is what I see now when I head out of my house to go into town.

Hey David I'm enjoying your diary. I love this post. Poesia não é muda mas no silêncio também brota plays on two meanings of the noun muda (not the verb): as silent/dumb (poesia não é muda, poetry is not silent) and as a plant graft (poesia brota, it blooms). Tricky language, Portuguese. You're doing great
ReplyDeleteTo make it clearer: poesia não é muda, it's not a plant graft, but it thrives (or buds, as you said, that's right)
ReplyDeleteThanks Jorge. Appreciate that. I couldn't work out "muda"
ReplyDeleteHave you had Brazilian helping you with how some things could be better phrased? There's also our tricky gendered words... If you want help with that I can do it by email. I loved the post on buses, awesome.
